GNOSSIENNE: Family Room

A cozy corner of the family room features a deep blue denim Timothy Oulton sofa, a vintage ochre rug, and a towering Monstera plant by French doors that open to the garden. A plantation chair and simple burlap-draped table add warmth and texture.

This was the first room of the Gnossienne project to come into focus. A room for reading, resting, and watching films—anchored by books on one wall and a TV on the other. It had to feel informal, lived-in, and easy to be in.

The coffee table was already part of the homeowners’ collection—its familiar shape grounding the space early on. Much later in the project, a Timothy Oulton sofa in washed denim was brought in, adding heft and softness in equal measure. A vintage rug sourced on Etsy introduces muted ochre and golden maize tones underfoot, warm against the light oak floors.

A Room That Opens Gently

A towering Monstera plant was relocated here partway through the project, its sculptural branches settling in naturally by the French doors. Across from it, a late 19th-century plantation chair brings a sense of time and patina, softened by a round table draped in simple burlap.

The artwork above the sofa—a piece by James Jean—introduces narrative energy, its color and movement echoing the room’s gentle rhythm. A South Asian artwork on a nearby wall adds another layer of visual storytelling, further enriching the space’s layered character. French doors open onto the backyard, allowing the space to expand into the garden. This connection to the outdoors keeps the room feeling relaxed—a space shaped by books, daylight, and the pleasure of sitting still.
