MAKE UP WITHOUT A FACE
"Makeup without a face" tackles the noun "woman" through a masquerade of makeup. Following the notion of femininity qua masquerade and Lacan’s barred article “la” whenever it precedes the noun femme ("woman"), as in his famous phrase - la femme n'existe pas ("woman does not exist"), femininity is unyielding to all forms of generalisation.
It is insofar as a woman is characterized by an original masquerade or makeup as all her features are artificially put on and are openly deceptive, that a woman can’t be identified with it. The radical artificiality and deception of her features states the fact that she is a sheer void and thus she can’t be identified with them. A masquerade of makeup is a mask, there is nothing beneath it. And it is precisely because the mask hides "nothing”, the deceptive strategy of a mask is to preserve the "nothing" of her freedom.
