BED-ERMEIER: Bedroom

Bedroom IS Bed

In any bedroom, regardless of size, the bed should be the starting point. Decoration can wait. The impression that stays with anyone—homeowner or guest—is not the paint on the walls, but whether the bed was comfortable. If there’s only one thing to get right, it should be the bed.

This bedroom of the Bed-ermeier Project , the upholstered bed is set between two built-in wardrobes, with a soft fabric canopy overhead and a neutral textile headboard behind. The rest of the room is pared back, but the bed is made with care. A proper mattress, down or hypoallergenic pillows, natural-fiber sheets—these are essentials, not luxuries. A dotted coverlet and a lightweight kantha quilt add subtle texture and color. Even a single decorative pillow can be enough to make the bed feel welcoming and joyful.

Good bedding lasts—it’s slept in, washed, inherited. It outlives trend and styling. Crisp white sheets alone can sometimes feel too flat; layering brings warmth and presence, especially in a quiet room like this.

Built-in details add quiet support: a recessed reading light and a small wall niche that holds a cup for tea or coffee. You don’t need more than this. A soft surface, a good lamp, a place to rest your drink—these are the elements that make the room work. Everything else can follow. The bed is the bedroom. Start there.
