GNOSSIENNE: Living Room

A vintage rug and mid-century credenza ground the living room, while layered lighting, sculptural seating, and collected objects bring softness and depth.

The living room is the largest space in the house, but its warmth doesn’t come from scale—it comes from how it’s layered. Designed not for performance but for conversation, it holds multiple seating scenarios and lighting options, always placing comfort within reach. We began with the center: a rust-toned upright sofa, well-suited to the room’s front-facing purpose—gathering, chatting, pausing. From there, the space radiates outward.

A vintage ruby-colored rug, slightly narrow by traditional standards, proved just right. It keeps the room from feeling over-designed—laid not too carefully, just confidently enough. A mid-century credenza sourced on Etsy anchors the wall between two windows, holding a mix of objects old and new: a turntable, vessels, a vintage tramp art lamp, and a Soho Home table lamp. Above it, artwork selected during the project adds a graphic focal point, including a prayer mat artwork by Samira Idroos. The styling remains relaxed—designed to look settled, not staged.

Soft Layers, Practical Rhythm

Seating happens in levels: the curved silver lounge chair from Forom Shop, low stools in lime yellow that can be pulled up easily, and a soft circular coffee table—dark and quiet in form, always within reach. The room is built around small gestures of usability. Each seat has a surface nearby, and lighting comes from multiple sources, not just overhead. The original ceiling chandelier came with the home, but we swapped in cord shades and 2700K bulbs to soften the light. Now it glows rather than glares.

A sculptural plant from Tropics in Hollywood brings life to a corner, echoing the natural forms of the curved furniture and the branching layout.

This is not a room of luxury in the conventional sense. It’s a room of everyday luxuries: usable things with weight, softness, and history.
